Le nom est surtout porté en Corrèze, mais on le rencontre aussi dans les Pyrénées-Atlantiques (variante : Longi). On peut penser à une forme occitane de Longin (voir ce nom), mais il semble qu'on ait plutôt affaire à un toponyme, en tout cas en Corrèze, où deux hameaux s'appellent Le Longy : à Champagnac-la-Noaille et à Millevaches. Sens possible : parcelle de terre longue et étroite. Un autre hameau s'appelle Le Longin à Saint-Julien-d'Armagnac (40), il pourrait expliquer la forme Longi dans le Sud-Ouest.
